Hurting yourself—or thinking about hurting yourself—is a sign of emotional distress. These uncomfortable emotions may grow more intense if a person continues to use self-harm as a coping mechanism. Learning other ways to tolerate the mental pain will make you stronger in the long term. Self-harm also causes feelings of shame. The scars caused by frequent cutting or burning can be permanent.

This month our Greatest Need comes from our Clinical department, which manages all the life-changing mental health treatment on our Colonel Glenn campus. One of our many treatment programs is EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. The name is a mouthful, and it gets even more interesting when you learn about it.

What are Youth Home's Greatest Needs?

Our greatest needs run the gamut from comfy clothes to therapeutic technology to major facilities improvements and equipment. This month, we are featuring a list of the things our kids and team members need donated according to Shelly, our certified Recreation Therapist and Director of Recreation Services. Our kids receive recreation services every day, including Physical Education during the school day and special field trips and events throughout the year.
