Youth Home Inc TRICARE East & West Residential Program for Children Ages 12-17 with Mental Illness

Independent Living Skills

Residential Treatment

At Youth Home, we believe that independent living skills improve the quality of life for each client, improving relationships and confidence for a child that will carry them into adulthood.

This training includes daily chore and hygiene training and practice, social skills and etiquette training, professional development opportunities and more.

Our mission is to help each child become a contributing member of their community, and that starts with being able to adequately take care of themselves.

Patients in residential care are trained in social skills, impulse control, empathy and self-awareness as they unpack their trauma with a highly skilled team of therapists.

What You Need to Know

  • Regular Game Play

To have fun and enjoy quality time with friends means that a child must subconsciously know that they are in a safe environment, and able to let their guard down.

That’s a hard ask for youth who have experienced prolonged or severely traumatic events.

In Youth Home’s program, residents are given the opportunity to enjoy safe game play, which of course increases the measure of their quality of life with the help and necessary guidance from our therapy team.

This also inadvertently gives opportunity to improve social skills, although Youth Home also trains social skills independent of game play, as well.

  • Independent Living

While in our program, residents will have the opportunity to learn independent living skills and practice them multiple times per day. This includes skills like:

    • Personal hygiene like how to shower, brush their teeth and hair, apply deodorant, regularly wear and change into clean clothes, etc.
    • Home maintenance chores like laundry, cleaning a room, organizing, etc.
    • Building & Maintaining healthy relationships
    • Basic Budgeting
    • & More.
  • Professional Development

During school, students will have opportunities to learn professional development like:

    • Resumé Writing
    • Interviews
    • Work Etiquette
    • & More
  • Community Outreach

Youth Home also has an incredible outreach program, initiated by the current Recreational Therapy Director, Shelly Zellner, who has been a part of Youth Home’s team for over 25 years.

She consistently reports that the volunteer work Youth Home clients take part in totally changes their perspective on life.

    Patients enjoy volunteer opportunities to:

    • Package food for the hungry and homeless in our area at the Arkansas Food Bank
    • Spend time with the elderly at 2-3 different assisted living facilities
    • Write and draw Christmas cards for military personnel who are deployed overseas
    • Make valentines cards and artwork for the patients receiving care at the local Children's Hospital.
    • & More.

These are just a few of the outings and activities they’ve enjoyed serving in over the last six months.

The patients tend to leave experiences like this changed, more likely to become successful and contributing members of their families and communities.
